Student jobs in Alberta: what you can earn, what age you can start, and where to look
Alberta's general minimum wage is $15.00 an hour, and employers can pay students under 18 a student rate of $13.00 for the first 28 hours in a school week. You can take light jobs at 13 with a parent's consent, and most retail and food service roles open up at 15. Calgary and Edmonton carry the bulk of youth hiring, with Red Deer and Lethbridge close behind.
Alberta minimum wage for students
Two numbers matter if you are under 18. The general minimum wage in Alberta is $15.00 per hour. The student minimum wage, which Alberta calls the job creation student wage, is $13.00 per hour. It applies to students under 18 who are enrolled in school, up to grade 12, or in a post-secondary or vocational program.
The student rate has limits. While school is in session, an employer can pay $13.00 for your first 28 hours in a week. Any hour past 28 in that same week must be paid at $15.00 or more. During summer, spring break and the Christmas holidays, the $13.00 rate can apply to all your regular hours, and normal overtime rules still apply.
The student wage is a floor, not a requirement. Many Alberta employers pay 15 to 17 year olds the full $15.00 or more, especially in warehouses, grocery and recreation centres, and YouthBoard shows the wage on every listing so you can compare.
How old do you have to be to work in Alberta?
Alberta uses three age bands. The table below summarises the provincial rules for each one.
| Age | What you can do | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| 12 and under | Artistic work only (film, theatre, modelling) with a permit | Parent or guardian consent, hours set in the permit |
| 13 to 14 | Office or retail clerk, messenger, flyer and retail delivery, light janitorial work, tutoring, coaching, food service with continuous adult supervision | Parent consent for every job, no work 9 pm to 6 am, no work during school hours, max 2 hours on a school day and 8 hours on a non-school day |
| 15 to 17 | Most jobs, no permit needed | At 15, no work during school hours. In retail and hospitality, 9 pm to midnight only with adult supervision, nothing between 12:01 am and 6 am |

A 13 or 14 year old who wants a job not on the approved list, for example kitchen prep, needs a permit from Employment Standards. From 15 you do not need a permit for ordinary work. If you are called in and sent home early, Alberta requires at least 3 hours of pay at minimum wage, reduced to 2 hours for 13 to 15 year olds on school days.
Where the student jobs are in Alberta
Alberta's youth job market follows its population. The Campus Atlas page for Alberta shows the live openings by city, but the pattern is steady year to year.
Calgary
Calgary is the largest market for part time work in the province: retail at Chinook Centre and CrossIron Mills, hospitality along 17th Avenue, and the warehouse belt near the airport. The Stampede in July is a short, intense burst of casual hiring for anyone 15 and up.
Edmonton
Edmonton has West Edmonton Mall, Whyte Avenue, the ICE District and a large network of City recreation centres. Summer festival season (Fringe, Heritage Festival, K-Days) means gate, concession and set-up jobs, and the University of Alberta, MacEwan and NAIT post campus roles each August.
Red Deer, Lethbridge and the mountain towns
Red Deer, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat have smaller but reliable grocery, fast food and recreation markets. Banff, Canmore and Jasper are a separate category: hotels, restaurants and ski hills hire heavily for winter and summer, and some offer staff housing, which makes them realistic for 17 and 18 year olds from across the province.
Typical first jobs for Alberta students
- Grocery clerk, cashier or cart attendant at Save-On-Foods, Sobeys, Co-op or Superstore
- Quick service restaurant crew (counter, drive-through, kitchen prep at 15 and up)
- Lifeguard or recreation attendant at municipal pools, with Bronze Cross or NL certification
- Day camp counsellor or junior leader in July and August
- Mall retail associate, with heavy hiring in October for the holiday season
- Warehouse order picker for 17 and 18 year olds, often well above minimum wage
- Rink attendant, referee or minor hockey timekeeper in winter
How to find jobs near your school with Campus Atlas
Most students search by city and scroll past jobs they cannot get to. Open the Alberta page, pick your high school, college or university, and you will see the live openings in that city with youth-friendly roles first. The Atlas covers schools from Fort McMurray to Lethbridge, whether you are at a Calgary public high school, Red Deer Polytechnic or a Grande Prairie youth centre.
Build a one page resume with the free Resume Builder, which asks about school clubs, volunteering and sports instead of past jobs. Then search a radius you can actually travel: a 20 minute bus ride opens up far more listings than walking distance, but a 90 minute commute will not survive the first month of school. You can also filter all youth jobs by city if you are not tied to one school.
